Pakistan’s mediation role between Iran and Saudi Arabia

The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif arrives in Iran today from Saudi Arabia. In Riyadh on Monday and Tuesday in Tehran, successive interventions aim to ease tensions between the two countries.

"Pakistan is the country best placed to be a mediator between Iran and Saudi Arabia," because of its warm relations with Tehran, according to Sartaj Aziz, adviser for INternational Affairs to Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. In recent days, the visits program of the Pakistani delegation in Iran has changed several times. The conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia caused deep unease in Islamabad. The visit of the Minister of Defence originally planned was canceled and replaced by Nawaz Sharif, and local media reported that General Raheel Sharif, commander of the Pakistani armed forces, will accompany the Prime Minister.
